The Application Scope and Selection Principle of Y Strainers

The Y strainer is a common strainer on the pipeline transporting media. It is usually installed at the inlet end of pressure reducing valves, pressure relief valves, level control valves or other equipment of the water supply. And it is used to remove impurities in the medium and protect the valve from seal failures caused by mechanical impurities stuck in the seal ring, thus ensuring the normal operation of the valve and other equipment.

The application scope of Y strainers
 
The Y strainer has advanced structure, low resistance and convenient sewage discharge. The main applicable materials are as follows.
 
1. Weak corrosives in chemical and petrochemical production, such as water, ammonia, petroleum products and hydrocarbons.
 
2. Corrosive substances in chemical production, such as caustic soda, soda ash, concentrated sulfuric acid, dilute sulfuric acid, carbonic acid, acetic acid.
 
3. Low temperature materials in refrigeration, liquid methane, liquid ammonia, liquid oxygen and various refrigerants, etc.
 
4. Materials with hygienic requirements in food industry and pharmaceutical production, such as beer, beverages, dairy products and medical supplies.

The selection principle of Y strainers
 
1. In principle, the inlet and outlet diameter of hydraulic filters should not be smaller than the inlet diameter of pumps, and generally are consistent with the inlet diameter of pipelines.

2. Nominal pressure: Determine the pressure rating of the strainer according to the maximum possible pressure in the pipeline.
 
3. Selection of the mesh number: Mainly consider the particle size of impurities to be intercepted.

4. Filter materials: The material of the hydraulic filter is generally the same as that of process pipes it connect itself with. For different service conditions, hydraulic filters made of cast iron, carbon steel, low alloy steel or stainless steel can be considered.
 
Commonly used Y-type strainers have specifications of 10 mesh, 14 mesh and 20 mesh. Y strainers can only be installed in horizontal pipes, and the flow direction of media must be consistent with the arrow direction marked on the shell of the strainer.
